Author and Historian Speaks in Grafton
Jack
Larkin, author of “Where We Lived: Discovering the Places We Once Called
Home, The American Home 1775-1840” will give a presentation on his book at
the Brick Church Meeting House in Grafton, Vermont on Wednesday, May 16 at
6:30 pm. Mr. Larkin was the Chief
Historian at Old Sturbridge Village for many years and
is currently Affiliate Professor of History at Clark University as well as the
author of several books.
In
“Where We Lived” Mr. Larkin, through the use of photographs, woodcuts,
engravings, drawings, paintings, artifacts, and maps, as well as text, explores
the dwellings of our American ancestors, from the most humble abode to more
lavish accommodations. Details about daily life emerge from the examination
of the housing arrangements of people from a broad geographical and cultural
range. A review in the Vermont Historical Society publication, Vermont History, states “Where We
Lived makes a noteworthy contribution to this line of research by
effectively demonstrating how these sources can be combined to provide a
richer perspective on day-to-day life during this early period of American
history…”
Please join us for this fascinating look into the homes and daily
lives of people in the 18th and 19th centuries. This
program is co-sponsored by the Grafton Historical Society and the Grafton
Public Library. We are very pleased to announce that this program is in
memory of former Grafton resident, Jean Whitnack,
an accomplished woman who loved history and learning and devoted time and
resources to the preservation of both. We would also like to thank the private
donors who have made this presentation possible. Please call the library at
843-2404 or email librarian@graftonpubliclibrary.org
for more information about the program.
