Grafton Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting

                               Monday, April 20, 2026, 10:00am

          Hybrid Meeting:  John Saroff on Zoom, present are Mary Beth Culver, Michelle Dufort, Lucia Corwin, Galen Johnson and Donna Alexander

 

1.       Call to order: 10:05am

2.      Public Comment:  none

3.      Approved minutes from last meeting 

4.      Treasurer’s Report:  A $15,000 transfer has been made from TIAA and will be reflected in next month’s budget report.  There was discussion about how to best manage a capital expense budget.

5.       Librarian’s Report: The library continues to be the recipient of new books from generous Grafton residents.  The popular Neighbor to Neighbor Program will return Wednesday, May 27th, offering an evening with author Peter Canellos who will be discussing his latest book, Revenge for the Sixties:  Sam Alito and the Triumph of the Conservative Legal Movement.   Books will be available for sale.                              The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is next month.  The library will be participating with a float with a tree covered in book jackets of pertinent titles.  There will be two parade planning meetings on Saturdays, May 16 & 23, 10am to 12.  The Banned Book Club will meet on Wednesday, May 13, 6:30-7:30pm.  The book to be discussed is Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison.  The annual Walk of Wonder will be on Sunday, May 17, 11am to 12am.

6.      Old Business:  The completed HUD grant was submitted by Michelle.  The grant money will be awarded by July or August—we will learn if we made it to the next tier well before that time.

7.      New Business:  If we do not get the HUD grant, we need to explore options for developing a capital budget line or other mechanism to earmark and save for major building projects.  Michelle to explore with the town how they account for and build their capital lines.  Our endowment and annual appeal cover normal operating expenses but not major building repairs.  Our endowment and annual appeal cover normal operating expenses but not major building repairs.  The annual budget will include guesstimates for benefits and energy costs.[MD1] 

8.       We decided to attend a Selectboard meeting instead of a Meet and Greet at the library per their request.

9.      Executive Session:  The board voted to go into an executive session to discuss Michelle’s evaluation report. The board voted to leave Executive Session.
